England managed to win 3-1 away to Belarus tonight.
“I’m very happy because I said before the game this will be a very important game for us as Belarus are a good team,” he told Setanta Sports.
“In the first half, they played very well but, in the second half, we played better and we scored three goals and one post [when Gerrard should have netted] – half a goal!
“I think, in this moment, we are in a very, very good moment of form. We are a team. We play like a team, like a group and this is very important.
“Gerrard played well, Rooney, [Frank] Lampard, [Gareth] Barry and all the players. I think Emile Heskey is very important for us.
“It’s important if we want to win we have to play like a team not like single players. This is important and, today, I saw one team.
“I changed some things after the first half and said to some of the players sometimes Heskey, Rooney and Gerrard to press their number two, the holding player. In the second half, I decided to put Gerrard always against him.
“Rooney is very, very important and is in a good moment and he’s scored goals. He worked a lot for the team. It’s a fantastic team not only Rooney, as I said before, all the players were fantastic tonight.
“There’s no secret. It’s working to create the group to create mentality and confidence. This is very important because the players are good players.
“It’s only another step but an important step. We had three games away but it’s only one step as there are other games.
“It’s another step, another victory. It’s important but we have to play more games to go to South Africa.”
