Carrick told the PFA’s website: “At Tottenham I played the holding role.
“I’d hear ex-pros criticising my goalscoring and I’d laugh. The gaffer was happy with what I was doing and getting into those forward positions wasn’t my priority.
“For United, I’m not playing so deep, so I’ve got to produce goals. I’m having to make forward runs I haven’t done in years.
“Now is the time, this is the season, I’ve got to step up to the plate.”
