Owen scored a hat-trick on Tuesday in United’s 3-1 win over German side Wolfsburg.
Carrick said: “It’s not my decision, but you can only go on how many important goals Michael scores. I don’t think he’s proven anything this week that we didn’t know already.
“He’s done it throughout his career, scoring big goals, taking chances. He does it in training all the time.
“We know if we give him chances he’ll put them away.
“He has scored some massive goals for us already and I’m sure he’ll continue to do that. Against Wolfsburg he had four chances and scored from three of them.”
