Chelsea have extended the contract of Ian Maatsen by an additional year, after having activated an option in his contract.
The 21-year-old defender’s unfolding contract narrative had caught the attention of several clubs. Now, with Chelsea’s proactive decision, Maatsen’s commitment to the Blues is sealed until 2025, according to the Evening Standard.
Barcelona had reportedly set sights on roping in Maatsen on a free transfer and might have been poised to commence negotiations from January.
Yet, Chelsea’s updated terms now mean that Barcelona would need to delve deep into their coffers. This, while Premier League contenders, including West Ham and Burnley, are also in the fray.
Chelsea’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, envisions a pivotal role for Maatsen, although the club did greenlight a tempting loan-to-purchase offer from Burnley valued at £31.5m earlier.
