Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is keen to bring in Barry as a replacement for Michael Essien, who will be out of action for the whole season with an injury.
Scolari has offered Stephen Appiah a short-term deal at the club, but is desperate to bring in Barry in January.
It is believed Aston Villa will let their highly rated midfielder leave the club for £18million.
