Cleverley impressed while on loan at Wigan last season and Van Aanholt joined the Latics on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day.
The Holland Under 21 defender told Wigan’s official website: “I want to try and emulate what Tom Cleverley did here last season.
“He took his opportunity and is now playing regularly in the Premier League at Manchester United.
“If I can make the most of my season at Wigan Athletic hopefully it will help me to achieve something similar.”
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez convinced the 21-year-old to move to the DW Stadium
“The manager called me personally and told me how he’d love me to join the club and offer me this opportunity,” said Van Aanholt.
“That was a big influence and I told him I would really like to come and prove myself to see if I can compete regularly in the Premier League.
“So it feels great to have joined. Everyone has welcomed me very well at the club and I’m delighted to be here.
“Wigan Athletic are a good team and are going in the right direction so hopefully I can help the club progress and offer something different.
“I spoke with (Chelsea manager) Andre Villas-Boas as well and he said gaining experience of playing in the Premier League was important for me at this stage of my career and that it would help me develop a great deal for when I return to Chelsea.”
