The 26-year-old’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2013.
Finke told Sport Bild: “Lukas Podolski’s contract is definitely a strong topic for this club, there is no doubt about that.
“We are planning to start negotiations about this with Lukas Podolski this winter.
“We are well aware of the expiry of the contracts of our players.
“We will definitely not wait until the last moment, we intend to have decisions made before that.”
Podolski, who has scored four times in six Bundesliga games this season, joined Cologne from Bayern Munich two years ago.
