The 29-year-old’s new deal will keep him at the Ricoh Arena until the summer of 2013.
“Gary, like me, is as committed to the club as all those fans that support the club from the stands,” Thorn told Coventry’s official website.
“He’s one of them and he loves Coventry City. It’s been great to get some of the younger lads on longer-term contracts but we need experience here too and Gary has got that in abundance.
“We are starting to see him get back to full match fitness and sharpness and we have all seen what he is capable of when that happens.
“He’s got a big part to play for us this season and it would be great to see him get back on the goal trail.”
McSheffrey joined Coventry from Birmingham last summer.
