The member said “it has significantly harmed England’s bid”, referring to the Sunday Times investigation that found members of the FIFA panel who will decide who hosts the competition were willing to sell their votes for money.
Senior sources are concerned at further investigations harming the bid more than it has done already, and are considering asking all newspaper editors in the UK to write to FIFA expressing their desire for England to host the 2018 competition.
England’s main rival is Russia, and the decision on who will host the tournament will be made on December 2.
