Manchester Evening News reports that Gibson is readying a bid for the Republic of Ireland international.
Gibson was close to joining Sunderland last summer, but the deal fell through.
The 24-year-old was recalled for the Boxing Day win against Wigan after having spent much of the season on the fringes.
