The 26-year-old signing from Bayern Munich, is set to make his debut against Doncaster tonight or Peterborough tomorrow.
Ferguson said: “His broken leg delayed the transfer but some players are worth waiting for — and he is one.
“It’s good to get him on board at last.
“I won’t saddle him with comparisons to Bryan Robson, Roy Keane or Eric Cantona.
“You can never find a new so-and-so as every player’s different.
“What I can say is, like those eminent predecessors, he’ll bring stature to his position.”
He added: “Owen’s European experience with Bayern Munich will be priceless.
“The new players will strengthen us, especially in the Champions League.
“We’ve faltered in three semi-finals now and a club of our stature should do better.”
