Rooney featured in a practice game for Preston last season and impressed Ferguson.
Ferguson told the Lancashire Evening Post: “John came here and did really well in a match.
“But at the moment we won’t be taking that one further.”
Rooney is available on a free transfer as his contract at Macclesfield will expire at the end of the month.
