Ferguson told ITV: “I thought he was fantastic. It’s always difficult choosing captains.
“I was looking for outfield player and maybe I overlooked Edwin van der Sar. [Rooney] responded to it, absolutely brilliant.”
On United’s performance against the Danish side Ferguson said: “I think they’ve grown up, they don’t want any more embarrassments,” said Ferguson. “They’ve done their best and it was a very good performance.
Ferguson was also impressed with the visitors.
He said: “They had a decent technical football team, which is what you get from Scandinavians. But we tried to keep the pace quick and we got a good performance and a good result.
“After half time, we wanted to be more decisive. With the amount of opportunities we got in the first half it was gratuitous, we should have killed the game.”
