The 31-year-old joined Everton from Inter Milan in 2005 but failed to make an impact at the club due to a series of injuries.
“I quit,” said Van der Meyde when announcing the end of his career. “I do not need to give an interview.”
The winger started his career at Ajax, where he won two league titles.
