The 24-year-old is keen to stay and fight for a place in Sunderland boss Steve Bruce’s starting XI.
Des Wroe told The Journal: “Of course Phil wants to play first-team football which is no different from any other player.
“But Phil will happily go back to Sunderland in pre-season and fight it out with any new signings that Steve Bruce decides to make in his position.
“Phil loves being at Sunderland – he loves the club and I don’t think he would want to move in an ideal world.
“It’s a good club and he’s certainly not got a problem with anyone there. He’s a positive lad and he’ll go in and have confidence that he can prove his worth to the manager.
“I think if someone comes in for him and Sunderland accept a bid then obviously that may change, but Phil will happily be back at the club over the summer.”
