The Black Cats are leading the race to sign Van Nistelrooy on a free transfer as his contract ends at Hamburg at the end of the season.
Sunderland are ready to hand the 34-year-old a £60,000-a-week deal, according to The People.
Van Nistelrooy has previously been linked with the likes of Stoke and Tottenham.
