Chelsea managed to win the game 1-0 thanks to a first-half header by Michael Essien.
“Overall we’re disappointed with the result,” Hughes told Sky Sports News.
“We’re pleased with the performance but we thought we deserved something.
“We came close on a couple of occasions towards the end of the game and (Petr) Cech made two outstanding saves to keep us out. If one of those had gone in then who knows?”
He added: “We asked more questions (in the second half) than we did in the first half and it was important that we did that.
“I thought we showed real drive and determination to get back into the game.”
“It’s obviously really difficult at Stamford Bridge against a quality side such as Chelsea,” he said.
“Lots of teams come here and really struggle so we take confidence from it.
“We ask so many questions of big teams that when we go up against teams of lesser ability we’ll get the points.”
