Gazza said: “Carrick’s a great player.
“He’s one of these guys who never gives the ball away and he’s a brilliant passer.
“He works hard to win the ball and when he gets it he uses it well.
“I was lucky with my international career and Michael’s in the same boat.
“A few years ago Neil Webb got injured and I got my chance to play for England. I made the most of it from there and didn’t look back.
“It looks like Michael will get his opportunity against Macedonia and he deserves it. He’s started the season well and he has to take his chance while he can.”
Its believed Carrick will start the match against Macedonia on Saturday, instead of Owen Hargreaves who is out with a injury.
