The Black Cats suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss at Birmingham on Saturday.
The Scotland international said in The Sun: “It was very disappointing because we didn’t really compete. It is back to the drawing board.
“The manager said we only started playing in the last quarter and that’s not enough. He’s right.
“It would have been deceptive had we got a point, but we would take it.”
