The new deal will keep the 23-year-old Dutchman at Euroborg until the summer of 2015.
“We were already talking to each other, but my intention from the beginning was actually to stay in Groningen,” he told the club’s official website.
“I feel comfortable with FC Groningen and I really like the atmosphere of the club. FC is still under development and is on the rise. I want to remain a part of that.”
Groningen technical manager Henk Degree Field added: “It always gives things an extra dimension when a young player from your youth side breaks into the first team. He has long been a fixture within the first selection.
“We had been talking with him to see if we could extend his expiring contract and we are delighted that Tom has made this choice.”
