Hughes told Sky Sports News: “We needed to see the game out.
“I think it was a game that had draw written all over it to be honest, with both sides struggling to get decent positive play.
“I felt towards the end of the game we had good opportunities in wider areas where we needed to produce and that was something that was happening right through the game.
“I felt we didn’t capitalise on the good opportunities we had and if you don’t do that sometimes you get hurt by the sucker punch.
“It’s hard to take so late in the game.”
