The 33-year-old has signed a two-year contract and is expected to replace Germany defender Christoph Metzelder, who is expected to leave the club this summer.
He said: “I am looking forward to the challenge of playing for Dortmund.
“The sporting potential is clearly in Borussia Dortmund’s favour and that is why I am delighted to be back in the Bundesliga next season.”
