Liverpool boss Benitez delighted with three points

Steven Gerrard scored both goals for Liverpool in the match.

Benitez told the BBC: “I think it was important to win three points in this stadium because it is very difficult. They are a very good offensive team so we needed to do very well in defence. We played on the counter attack, could be better but at the end of the day, three points is a massive result for us.

“Clearly, they have a very good mentality. As a team you can see a lot of players working together with quality, with pace and with ability. We knew it could be difficult and it was difficult.

“Babel had three very, very clear chances. We had three or four counter attacks but the final pass was not good enough. When you play against a team that is very, very offensive, you know you will have your chances and you need to take your chances.”

Benitez added on Gerrard’s performance in the match: “We know he has quality. To score three [sic] goals in a game is really good. He showed he can change games and also he showed that he can improve. That is another positive.

“It was amazing. It was a fantastic goal. This goal, you can’t see too many like this goal in ten years. It was really good.”
