Gerrard played on the heart of England’s midfielder in the 3-0 win over Andorra on Wednesday and scored two goals.
Benitez said: “It’s not my problem, it’s more important to keep the team winning. That’s what keeps a player happy.
“But Stevie’s a clever player and knows his role in the England team and his role in ours. He can play well in a lot of positions.
“Two seasons ago he got 23 goals for us playing on the right.
“Maybe after he’s got 23 in the middle we can talk about it again. He’s happiest in the middle but he is prepared to play anywhere.
“And the best season of his life was from playing on the right.”
