Tuttomercato.com reports that Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is confident he can beat AC Milan and Juventus in the race to sign the Frenchman.
The Reds have struggled at the back this season and are in the Premier League relegation zone.
Hodgson will be looking to bring in at least one new defender in January if he remains in charge at Anfield.
