He told the Mirror: “To be considered a truly great player you have to be playing for one of the truly great clubs.
“I came here to take that chance and try to become one of the greats.
“No Spanish striker has ever moved abroad and been regarded as one of the greats, but somebody’s got to be the first. What I have got is the chance to do that and I want to take it.
“In Spain I was regarded as a player of great promise, and now I believe I am ready to make the step up to the next level.
“I have come to one of the great clubs, for a large fee, and there is expectation on me to deliver. That doesn’t scare me.
“If you want to be one of the greats, then you have to be able to deal with the pressure and fulfil those expectations.
“I have to come to Anfield with a humble and modest attitude, but I know I have to aim high because I know people will now want to see me score the goals that this move demands.”
The Spaniard turned down the chance to join Chelsea last season.
