The former Liverpool midfielder said: “Atletico was always my priority should I have returned to Spain. They were the team that was always on my mind.
“The other day the fans gave me a standing ovation for five minutes. It was wonderful.
“I want to do something important in the history of this club.”
He added: “Atletico have improved a lot on last season. There’s a lot of quality in midfield and in defence. We now have players who do not commit errors.”
