United have seen 13 players out iwht injuries of late something that have forced him to deploy players such as Fletcher and Michael Carrick at the back.
“It was a satisfying performance because we had three midfielders in defence and changed the formation,” the Scot said following the 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
“We had 13 players out and it shows the strength and depth of the squad. Michael and I played at the back and Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson and Anderson controlled the game from midfield.
“Wolfsburg had two or three free headers in the first half but apart from that they didn’t really have much.”
Nemanja Vidic is expected to return to action against Aston Villa on Saturday.
“Hopefully Vida will be back and I can move to right-back,” added Fletcher.
“We have a few problems at the back and the sooner our defenders come back the better, but if not we’ll have to rally round as a team like we did in midweek and try to put in a professional performance.
“We always go into games thinking we have enough quality to win the match, no matter what the team is.
“But we want our defenders fit because we have some big games coming up and need everyone available.”
