Hargreaves said: “From a distance you associate United with the Premier League title, which is probably the most prestigious in Europe.
“But I’m reading Roy Keane’s book and he says the most important thing at the club is the Champions League.
“There is a conversation with him and Alex Ferguson, who says that without him they can win the Premier League but they need him fit to win the Champions League.
“He pulls Jaap Stam up when Stam says the priority is the league title and tells him it’s Europe.
“The book came out a while ago and I can’t say whether the manager would say that these days but, there is a totally different atmosphere at Old Trafford for European games than for domestic fixtures.
“United now considers itself a global brand and it needs success in Europe to strengthen that position.”
