The 19-year-old has been diagnosed with a groin injury.
Gotze has not played for Borussia Dortmund since 11th December.
A club statement read: “He will be out for six to eight weeks. That means Gotze will be back for the away game against Mainz 05 in mid-March at the earliest.”
Gotze has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal in recent months.
