Wayne Rooney scored the goal for United in a match where the Italians had a lot of chances.
Fergie said: “It was a fair result. There was a lot of patience from the players.
“There was good football from both teams and it was tactical at times.
“The goal was a great finish and a super diagonal run, but overall it was good team effort and they learned from the experience.”
He added: “To be fair AS Roma created a few chances, a couple of good chances actually, but they couldn’t put it away.”
