The Mirror reports that United have told Gibson that he can leave the club in the January transfer window.
Gibson has reportedly held preliminary talks with Premier League rivals Everton.
Gibson, who has made just two appearances for United this season, was set to leave United for Sunderland in the summer, but failed to agree on personal terms with the Black Cats.
