Premier League sides fail to get to the last four of the Champions League last year.
“I think it goes in cycles and it was a blip,” he told Sky Sports News.
“We came close to the semi-final, which would have been a great achievement to be there three years on the trot. It was a blip and I think you will see that put right this season.
“It goes in cycles – Spanish teams, Italian teams, English teams, German teams. It happens like that, that Italian teams get there one year and then it’s all English, it just happens.
“I would expect an English team to get to the semi-finals this season. I think we were the strongest last season, but in that kind of football anything can happen. We saw Greece win the European Championships a few years back and these things can happen.
“But I thought the best team won it last year, they were consistent right the way through. We were disappointed with the Bayern Munich game, not just the home game but the away one as well because we had chances over there. We shouldn’t have lost that game.”
