Owen sustained the injury in the recent 2-0 home win against Romanian side Otelul Galati in the Champions League.
A club statement read: “Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so.”
The former England striker is now expected to feature for United until Boxing day, when United face Wigan at Old Trafford, at the earliest.
