Manchester United are keeping tabs on Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino as the midfielder’s contract negotiations have reached a deadlock.
The 27-year-old, once a Premier League player with Newcastle, has become a mainstay in Spain’s national team under Luis de la Fuente, contributing significantly this season with three goals and three assists in La Liga, and an additional two goals in Champions League play.
With Sociedad vying for a European competition spot, positioned sixth in La Liga, Merino’s future is shrouded in uncertainty as he enters the last year and a half of his contract.
Reports from Spanish outlet COPE suggest that negotiations for renewal have halted, with Merino’s representation waiting to see if Sociedad secures European football.
Even then, Merino might consider moving due to interest from major clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid.
With a €60million release clause, Sociedad faces the dilemma of possibly selling him for less this summer or risking a free departure in 2025.
