The Daily Mirror reports that United are ready to sign Herrera in January fter their bid for the Athletic Bilbao midfielder hit a last-minute stumbling block on Monday.
United were reportedly ready to meet Herrera’s £30.4million buy out clause, but the Premier League giants were scared off by legal implications.
The deal became massively complicated and United left it so late, that there was simply not enough time to complete a move for Herrera.
Bilbao are keen to keep Herrera and are not prepared to sell the midfielder for less than his buy out clause.
Herrera had already agreed a five-year contract worth around £65,000 a week with United.
