Simpson told the Sunday Sun: “Nothing was said about a permanent move when I joined on loan – the deal was just until the end of the season.
“But if the chance of a permanent move to Sunderland came up, I’d jump at it.
“At Sunderland, I’ve had the chance to play in the first-team and it’s been terrific. This is a massive club – it is up there with the best.
“I didn’t really appreciate that until I came here, but now I have seen it for myself, I know it should be up there in the top flight.”
