The defender was injured during Roma’s 2-0 home defeat to Juventus at the weekend.
A club statement read: “Philippe Mexes underwent tests which have revealed a lesion in his anterior cross ligament in his left knee. The player will need to undergo surgery and the time of recovery will be evaluated in the coming days.”
