The 25-year-old has revealed he has been ‘obsessed about England’ ever since Middlesbrough were interested in signing him in 2010.
He told L’Equipe: “I want to leave a mark on Ligue 1 in my time. I want people to one day say ‘I remember Giroud, the one who led Montpellier to the Champions League’.
“I do this job to leave a mark, for the people around me to be proud. At first, that means making a name for myself as one of the best forwards in Ligue 1.
“Why did I choose Montpellier? I listened to my agent and the people around me. They advised me to first try Ligue 1. However, I was obsessed by England. But I put that aside.”
