Mourinho’s team went behind to a Cani strike at the Bernabeu, before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised. Marco Ruben restored the visitors’ lead before Ronaldo again scored just before the break. In the second half Real won as Ronaldo completed his hat trick and Kaka wrapped up the win with his first goal since making his comeback.
Mourinho said: “We were up against a fantastic Villarreal side, which is why I didn’t like the first half. I don’t like it when our opponent has an exceptional first half. They came closer to winning here than any other team and played great.”
