The preposterous comment was made before his first game in charge of Sunderland, against Blackburn, which is even more amusing given the way O’Neill’s teams tend to play – bland, dull and direct.
“I always come back to the way Barcelona play,” said O’Neill.
“It’s a long way in the future, but you’d love to keep that in the back of your mind and think you could eventually have a team that could come out and play like that.”
