In his column for The Sun, Redknapp wrote: “Sol Campbell must be choking on that Moscow nightmare more than anyone this morning.
“And when he arrives back at the Portsmouth training ground I’ll be telling him exactly how much my heart went out to him for that four-minute spell which brought us to our knees.
“I thought Sol – in fact the whole defence really – were magnificent yesterday and it was so, so hard to take when they came off as losers.
“Campbell and Rio Ferdinand were an absolute rock-solid pairing all game and we all know this is going to be Sol’s last chance of playing in a major finals for his country.
“All I can say to him is that he’s certainly done himself no harm with that performance.
“It’s strange to think now, but just a year ago people were saying he was finished.
“The only problem now for me is seeing if he’s fit for Saturday because that surface was shocking, especially for someone who has had the Achilles problems Sol has.
“It’s odd having lost the game but, if I was England manager, I’d have actually told the players they didn’t do a great deal wrong.”
