Simpson said: “It’s not for me to decide whether he’s good enough to play for England but Steve McClaren obviously thinks he is.
“It’s a wonderful achievement for everyone at Preston, none more so than David himself. McClaren came to watch him against Ipswich and he had his worst game of the season for us. But he’s seen enough of him to think he deserves the opportunity.
“On Saturday, he was back to his best in our 2-0 win over Burnley. He showed his pace and put in a really strong performance – the type of performance that Preston fans are used to seeing. He’s got that habit of knowing how to score goals.”
