Darren Ferguson, son of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has admitted that he is interested in using his connections at Old Trafford to bring in new players in the January transfer window.
Welbeck is regarded as one of the best youngsters at United in recent seasons, but Preston are keen on signing him on a loan deal.
Welbeck has made 11 appearances for United this season.
