The 24-year-old has failed to make an impact at Real Madrid since joining the club from Feyenoord in a €14million deal in the summer of 2007.
Drenthe spent last season on loan at Hercules. Reports have suggested that the Dutch international has been offered to Benfica as part of the possible deal which could see Fabio Coentrao join Real Madrid.
“Benfica are a big team and the Portuguese league is strong and competitive,” Drenthe’s agent Sigi Lens said in Marca. “This is what a footballer always likes.
“A lot of clubs have asked about Drenthe but there is nothing concrete as of yet, although there are several months before the transfer window closes.
“Madrid have not indicated anything either, and so I expect Drenthe to be with the team [for pre-season].”
