He told the Sunday Mirror: “I know for a fact that United have been scouring the world to try to get the next Roy Keane, but they are difficult to find, that’s for sure.
“I had hoped they might get Owen Hargreaves in the summer – or could still go back and take him this January because I think he could make the difference.
“I’ve been really impressed with him since he’s played in the centre of midfield. All the times I saw him with Bayern Munich or with England he was always being used wide, but he showed in the World Cup that he’s very quick and is a lot more aggressive than I realised he was.
“He’s also a nice, tidy passer of the ball and could mature more if he was played.
“Somebody told me he’s been Bayern’s Player of the Year for two seasons, and you have got to perform to some standard to be their best player for that long.”
