Robson told the Manchester Evening News: “The role Carrick has played in front of the back four and probing with his passing has been very good. He is a very intelligent midfielder and everything he does is neat and tidy.
“He’s not going to be smashing into tackles or anything like that, but if you look at the way he has released the likes of Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and also let Paul Scholes play, you will understand he is having a great effect. He reminds me a lot of Ray Wilkins in that he releases colleagues with intelligent passing and does his share of tackling back. He won’t score many goals – the same as Ray didn’t – but you notice that kind of player when he is not there.”
