Tevez will be out of contract in the summer when his two-year loan deal ends.
Tevez and his agent and advisor Kia Joorabchian have hinted that he could leave United this summer.
“Carlos is a world-class player and you always want to see those sort of players at your club,” Rooney said in the Daily Mirror.
“He’s got so much energy and has scored some vital goals.
“His work-rate is brilliant and hopefully he’ll sign a new deal to stay with us.”
