Rui Costa played for the Italian side between 1994 and 2001.
“The city of Florence deserves to have Champions League football and I was extremely happy for the people when they qualified,” Rui Costa told Sky TG 24.
“It is a great place and the fans deserve their team to be in this tournament because they have had it tough over the last few years.
“I remember the last time they played in the Champions League when I was in the team and I scored against Bordeaux.”
Fiorentina will face Steaua Bucharest, Bayern Munich and Lyon in Group F.
