He said: “At United I was in the reserve team and training with the first team but that wasn’t enough. A number of clubs wanted me and that was flattering.
“I learnt so much at United but it was time for me to move, although one day, who knows, I could be back there.
“My relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson was great. After my loan spell to Charlton ended he offered me a new contract and wanted me to stay.
“But after playing 25 games, I couldn’t go back to the bench. It wasn’t right for my development.”
